“Hello Girls,” as American soldiers called them, were American women who served as telephone operators for Pershing’s forces in Europe during World War I. The women were fluent in French and English and were specially trained by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. In 1979, the U.S. Army finally gave war medals and veteran benefits to the few Hello Girls who were still alive.

George Herman "Babe“ Ruth, Jr. (February 6, 1895 – August 16, 1948), was an American baseballoutfielder and pitcher who played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1914 to 1935. Nicknamed ”the Bambino“ and ”the Sultan of Swat“, he began his career as a stellar left-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, but achieved his greatest fame as a slugging outfielder for the New York Yankees. Ruth established many MLB batting (and some pitching) records, including career home runs (714), slugging percentage (.690),runs batted in (RBIs) (2,213), bases on balls (2,062), and on-base plus slugging (OPS) (1.164), some of which have been broken. He was one of the first five inductees into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
On this day, April 8 in 1974, Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hit his 715th career home run, breaking Babe Ruth’s longstanding career record, during a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Stadium. Aaron played two more seasons, ending with 755 home runs, a total eventually surpassed by Barry Bonds who has 762.
